A painted panel of the arms of the Scottish family of Robertson of Pitmillan (Aberdeenshire) Together with a 19th century framed needlework family armorial for the Scottish family of Houstoun of Calderhall, co. Edinburgh, 42 x 37.5cm (16 9/16 x 14 3/4in) The needlework panel: 21 x 16cm, (2) Footnotes: The painted panel: These are the arms of the Scottish family of ROBERTSON of Pitmillan (Aberdeenshire). They are ancient descendants of the Duke of Atholl. The original family of ROBERTSON, Chiefs of Clan Donnachaidh, have arms that included three wolves' heads on a red background. The version we see here is much differenced and in 1763 was exemplified by the Court of Lord Lyon for the use of this particular branch of the family. Notably a John ROBERTSON of Pitmillan, merchant was provost of Aberdeen 1736-8 and still present there in 1760. The blazon: argent, on a chief gules three wolves heads erased of the first and in base a chaplet vert all within a bordure counter-company also of the first and azure. Motto: VIRTUTIS GLORIA MERCES (also used by the parent clan). The embroidered armorial: These are the arms of the Scottish family of HOUSTOUN of Calderhall, co. Edinburgh that were matriculated in 1799 at the Court of Lord Lyon in Scotland. The family were later HOUSTON, who in 1836 were created Baronets and later 1847 assumed the arms and family name by royal licence of HOUSTON-BOSWALL. This dates the embroidery in the period 1799-1847. Notably General Sir William HOUSTON (1766-1842) KGCB was created in 1836 Baronet and Governor of Gibraltar. The blazon: or, a chevron chequy argent and sable between three martlets of the last. Motto: IN TIME With thanks to Roger Whitworth in the identification of these arms.
