Photography is the largest subject here, with a strong group of Japanese photobooks by photographers such as Daido Moriyama, Nobuyoshi Araki, Ken Domon and Yasuhiro Ishimoto, alongside European and American work including Magnum photographers, Slim Aarons and Lucien Clergue. Art books cover monographs, exhibition catalogues and catalogues raisonnés, plus illustrated books by artists such as Miró and Picasso. Erotica, graphic design and counterculture periodicals also appear. Most books are in English, Japanese, French or Italian.
Edition terms
- 1st edition: the first printing, the most sought-after state for photobooks.
- Limited edition: a fixed print run, often numbered and sometimes signed or issued with an original print.
- Obi: the paper band wrapped around Japanese books; collectors want it present.
- Slipcase: a protective case, part of a complete copy where the book was issued with one.
Condition and what to check
Many photobooks here are listed as fine or very good, and some as new or still sealed. Check the dust jacket and obi for tears, sun-faded spines and clipped prices. For a signed copy, look at where the signature appears and whether the photos show it. A reference to Parr and Badger's The Photobook: A History means the title appears in that standard survey, which tends to raise interest. Large-format books are heavy; dimensions are given in centimetres.

What is an obi on a Japanese photobook?
An obi is the narrow paper band wrapped around the lower part of a Japanese book's cover or jacket, printed with the title and publisher's text. It is easily torn or lost, so a first edition that still has its obi is scarcer and usually worth noticeably more than the same book without it.
What does Parr and Badger mean in a photobook description?
It refers to The Photobook: A History, the three-volume survey by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger. Books included in it are widely treated as landmark photobooks, and descriptions often quote the volume and page, for example Parr and Badger volume I, page 214, to show a title's place in the history of the medium.
What is a catalogue raisonné?
A catalogue raisonné is a complete, annotated list of an artist's known works in a given medium or period, with images, dimensions and history for each piece. The Andy Warhol volumes are a well-known example. They are reference works used by scholars and collectors and are often printed in small runs, which keeps them in demand.
