Contemporary full speckled calf, gilt titles to the spines, lightly worn to the spine ends, resulting in occasional loss, the boards generally attractive, with a few losses and abrasions to the leather, corners bumped, spines a touch dried. Armorial bookplate to the front pastedown, later ownership bookplate to the front endpapers. Some dog-earing to a few final leaves of the last volume, occasional marginal spots, generally bright. Richly illustrated with engraved plates, many of which folding. Volume I with seven plates, and one leaf publisher's ads to the rear (p. 231 creased to the top corner); volume II with eight plates, volume III with fourteen; volume IV with six folding tables (page vi with a perforation), and one leaf of publisher's ads.
